Alberta Rural Entrepreneur Stream
On 16th Feb 2022, Alberta announced changes to its nomination program. Apart from the name change of few nomination categories, AINP as a program has been renamed to AAIP (Alberta Advantage Immigration Program).
We recently witnessed the announcement of Accelerated tech pathway for foreign workers with a job offer from an Alberta-based tech industry employer. Now with the announcement of Rural Entrepreneur Stream, it looks like Alberta is again open for business and specifically looking for foreign investments & international talent.
Here are the key highlights of the Alberta Rural Entrepreneur Stream:
Program is to attract investments from the foreign entrepreneurs with a minimum investment of $200,000 and a total net worth of minimum $300,000. This program is a reflection of BC PNP Regional Pilot where rural communities will invite the foreign investors for the exploratory visit, and they will play a vital role in the nomination process. As one of the requirement of the program, the community must be outside of the Calgary and Edmonton Census Metropolitan Area.
There are certain requirements for the work/business management experience alongwith minimum language skills of CLB 4. Education Credential Assessment (ECA) report with minimum equivalency of Canadian high school standard is mandatory as part of the application process.
To invest in a new business, minimum 51% partnership is required, and other partners should be Canadian citizens or Permanent residents. For an existing business succession plan, transfer of 100% ownership is the requirement of this program. There are few more terms & conditions about the business plan. With a similarity to other investor programs, Rural Entrepreneur Stream has a requirement of minimum 1 job creation for a Canadian citizen or Permanent resident. Additional points are awarded for creating more than 1 jobs. There are few conditions attached to the job creation as well.
Additional points are awarded for the age of the investor, spouse’s education & language skills and for the relatives living in Alberta.
Table of points comprises different factors on the scale of 175 (maximum points).
