“My Canadian visa is valid for 10 years. Does that mean I can live in Canada for 10 years?” No. A Temporary Resident Visa, or TRV, does not give you permission to remain in Canada continuously for its entire validity period. Your visa expiry date and the deadline for your authorized stay serve different purposes.
What is a TRV
TRV stands for Temporary Resident Visa. Often called a visitor visa, it is the visa document placed in your passport that shows you meet the requirements to travel to Canada. Whether you need a TRV depends on your nationality, travel document and method of travel; some travellers need an electronic travel authorization, or eTA, instead.
A visa officer decides whether to issue a single-entry or multiple-entry visa and how long it will remain valid. IRCC states that a visitor visa may generally be issued for up to 10 years, limited by passport or biometrics expiry, whichever comes first. A 10-year visa is not guaranteed.

Visa validity and authorized stay are different
| Visa validity | Authorized stay |
| Period during which the visa can be used for travel to seek entry. | Period during which you may remain in Canada after admission. |
| Shown on the visa counterfoil in your passport. | Determined by your admission conditions and any later approved extension. |
| A long validity period supports future travel. | A separate deadline applies to your current visit. |
For example, suppose your TRV expires in 2036, but the border officer issues a visitor record allowing you to stay only until December 15, 2026. December 15 is the deadline that matters for that visit. The 2036 visa expiry does not extend it.

How long can you stay in Canada as a visitor
Most visitors are admitted for up to six months. A border services officer can authorize a shorter or longer stay and may record a specific departure deadline in your passport or issue a visitor record. Follow the authorized deadline rather than assuming you always receive six months.
If you receive no passport stamp, current IRCC guidance says the ordinary visitor stay ends at the earliest of six months after entry, passport expiry or biometrics expiry. Different rules apply to qualifying Super Visa holders. A passport entry stamp showing only your arrival date should not be confused with a separately specified date by which you must leave.
Keep a record of your arrival date and any documents issued at the border. If the authorized period is unclear, clarify it promptly rather than relying on the expiry date printed on your TRV.

Does a valid TRV guarantee entry
No. Your visa allows you to travel to seek admission, but the border officer still assesses whether you meet Canada’s entry requirements. You may be asked about your visit, accommodation, finances and departure plans. Carry relevant supporting documents, including your invitation letter if you have one.

Can you leave briefly and return for another six months
A short trip outside Canada does not guarantee a fresh six-month stay. On your return, admission and the authorized period are assessed again. A multiple-entry visa does not remove that assessment.
The practical implication is that repeated long visits separated by very short absences should not be treated as a guaranteed way to live in Canada indefinitely. Be ready to explain why your stay remains temporary and how you will support yourself. This follows from the requirement to satisfy the officer that you will leave at the end of your authorized stay.

Can you stay if your TRV expires inside Canada
Visa expiry alone does not end an otherwise valid authorized stay. For example, if your visa expires on October 31 but your visitor record authorizes you to remain until December 15, the visitor record governs your stay, provided you continue to comply with its conditions. Travel back to Canada is a separate issue; check the entry documents required before leaving.

How to extend your stay in Canada
If you want to remain longer as a visitor, apply for a visitor record before your current status expires. IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days in advance. That recommendation is a planning buffer; you must still submit before your actual status expiry. Renewing a TRV is not the application that extends visitor status.
IRCC source — When to apply for a visitor record
Explain why you need additional time, the period requested, how you will pay for your stay and your plans to leave. Include evidence of your identity and current status. An extension is assessed on its merits. You may request further extensions, but each requires a new application and fee, and you must continue to demonstrate that your residence is temporary.

Can you stay while the extension is processing
If you properly apply to extend your visitor stay before it expires and remain in Canada, you can generally stay under maintained status until IRCC decides the application. You must continue to follow your visitor conditions. Applying does not guarantee approval.
For example, your authorized stay ends on November 20, and you submit a complete visitor extension application on November 1. If IRCC has not decided it by November 20, you can generally remain while awaiting the decision. Keep your submission confirmation and a copy of the application.

An application returned as incomplete may be treated as never submitted. If your status has already expired by then, maintained status may not protect you. Completeness and timing both matter.

What if you have already overstayed
An unexpired TRV does not fix expired visitor status. Depending on your circumstances, restoration may be available if you apply within 90 days of losing status and meet the requirements. Approval is not automatic, and the restoration period is not an extra 90 days of valid visitor status. Seek an individual assessment promptly; departure may be necessary. Overstaying can lead to immigration enforcement consequences.

Does a visitor record replace your visa
No. A visitor record documents an authorized stay in Canada; it is not a visa and does not guarantee re-entry after travel. Before booking an overseas trip, check both your status document and the travel document you need to return.

Does a 10 year TRV allow you to work or study
The visa’s validity period does not itself authorize employment. Work authorization is a separate issue. Certain qualifying business activities can be undertaken without a work permit, but being a visitor is not general permission to take a Canadian job.

Similarly, a TRV is not a study permit. Most foreign nationals need a study permit to study in Canada, although specific exemptions exist. Check the requirements for your course and circumstances before enrolling or starting studies.

Is a 10 year visitor visa the same as a Super Visa
No. A standard TRV with a long validity period does not become a Super Visa. The Super Visa is designed for eligible parents and grandparents visiting qualifying family members in Canada and has separate requirements. It can allow visits of up to five years at a time and multiple entries over a period of up to 10 years. Even here, visa validity and the authorized length of each stay remain separate concepts.

A practical checklist for your next visit
- Check the expiry and number of entries shown on your visa before travel.
- Record your arrival date and review any departure deadline or visitor record issued at entry.
- Put your status expiry in your calendar separately from your TRV expiry.
- Begin preparing an extension early if your plans change.
- Reassess your documents before leaving Canada and attempting to return.
Frequently asked questions about TRV validity and visitor stays
Does a 10 year Canadian visa let me live in Canada for 10 years?
No. A TRV’s expiry determines when you may use it to travel. The deadline for each stay is separate and is set at entry or through an approved extension.
How do I know when I must leave Canada?
Check any departure date in your passport or visitor record. Without a stamp, ordinary visitors can generally stay until the earliest of six months after arrival, passport expiry or biometrics expiry. Super Visa rules differ.
Does every visitor receive a 10 year multiple entry visa?
No. IRCC decides the number of entries and validity. A visa may be issued for less than 10 years, including because of passport or biometrics expiry.
Can I stay in Canada after my visitor visa expires?
Yes, if your authorized stay remains valid and you comply with its conditions. Visa expiry does not itself shorten that stay. Check travel-document requirements before leaving and returning.
Will applying for a new TRV extend my visitor status?
No. To request more time as a visitor, apply for a visitor record before your status expires. A visa application and a visitor extension serve different purposes.
Can I remain while my visitor extension is being processed?
Generally, yes, if you submitted a complete extension application before your status expired and remain in Canada. Maintained status lasts until a decision, subject to the applicable rules. Keep proof of timely submission.
Does leaving Canada for a few days reset my six month stay?
No automatic reset is guaranteed. The border officer reassesses your eligibility and permitted stay when you return. A multiple-entry visa does not guarantee admission or another six months.
Does a visitor record allow me to re enter Canada?
No. It documents your authorized stay and is not a travel document. You must meet entry requirements and have the applicable visa or eTA when returning, unless an exception applies.
Can I take a Canadian job with a valid TRV?
A TRV alone does not authorize employment. You need a work permit or a specific work-permit exemption before undertaking work that requires authorization.
What if my visitor status expires while my visa is still valid?
The valid visa does not restore your status. Eligible visitors may seek restoration, generally within 90 days of losing status. That period is not an automatic extension. Obtain advice promptly about restoration or departure.
